Welcome to I have a Dream - Overtown, Inc.
What a year it’s been for I Have a Dream – Overtown, Inc. Beginning back in 2004, the promise continues for the long term commitment of this program. As these students stay with the program requirements and graduate from high school, a Florida college education was awaiting.
We are proud to tell you that The Children’s Trust has selected I Have a Dream - Overtown to be the recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Youth Development Programming Award for providing exemplary services to children ages 6 - 18.
Opportunities for Dreamers
Dreamers spent the 2009 summer on the Florida International University south campus participating in the Algebra Project along with high school students.
The majority of the Dreamers are now attending an excellent middle school that has a grade “A” by the State of Florida, thanks to Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Tutoring, mentoring, educational field trips and the requirement to participate in after school programming enhance the middle school experience. Dreamers have tried out for sports teams, joined drama and art clubs, Honor Society and other offerings at school.
Dreamers who are keeping their grades high are participating in a service learning project tutoring students at an elementary school
Miami Dade College
Miami-Dade College continues to provide a VISTA Volunteer each year through the Service Learning program. Professors Carlos Gonzalez and Alex Salinas from the Inter American campus are continuing to engage their college students and Dreamers in reading and writing activities. Visit their blog.
